Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LG), Lithuania's state-owned railway company, is expanding to Poland and looking into buying a cargo company in Poland and is looking for consultants, reports LETA/BNS.

"Currently, we are in the process of comprehensive expansion to Poland. (…) We do understand that the path of organic development is a long one, therefore, we also looking into possibilities to step it up. Therefore, we are looking into possibilities to acquire a cargo company operating in the Polish rail market," the company told BNS.

LG says external experts will help it to analyze potential development possibilities.

The Lithuanian railway group said its plans earlier this month that its expansion into Poland would diversify operational risks of the group's cargo company LTG Cargo, and help to increase cargo flows to 65-70 million tons per year.

LTG Cargo has already established a Polish subsidiary, LTG Cargo Polska, and is now in negotiation with Poland's PKP Cargo on the establishment of a joint enterprise that would be engaged in the transportation of intermodal cargoes between Lithuania and Poland.

In late June, Poland's Office of Rail Transport (UTK) issued LTG Cargo a safety certificate and the Lithuanian company plans to, first, launch a regular route Mockava-Bialystok.
