In case of favorable weather conditions, a record grain harvest is expected in Latvia this year, Minister of Agriculture Kaspars Gerhards (National Alliance) said in an interview with the Latvian Television this morning referred LETA.

"If the weather forecast remains sufficiently stable, this year could be a record year in Latvia, just as the previous year, when more than 3.3 miln tons of grain were harvested in Latvia," the minister said.

At the same time, Gerhards acknowledged that he did not support the introduction of migrant workers for agricultural work, especially in the context of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

"First of all, we should focus on the people of Latvia," said the minister, adding that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there are additional 20,000 unemployed persons in Latvia, and he reminded that regulatory changes have already been made to facilitate the attraction of seasonal workers in agriculture.

"It is clear that the import of migrant workers will not ensure the sustainable development of our economy as a whole," the minister said.
