Data from the country's State Border Service shows that 3,459 people left Lithuania for Latvia and Friday and 9,724 left on Saturday, compared to average 24-hour number of around 506 people before the restrictions were lifted.
611 people also arrived in Lithuania from Latvia on Friday and that number jumped to 5,284 people on Saturday, compared to the pre-relaxation average of 415.
"We believe people have actively used the opportunity to leave for the neighboring countries as the flows of those leaving and arriving have risen up to 20 times," Lithuanian Interior Minister Rita Tamasuniene said in a statement.
All four border control checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Latvian border will be opened as of Monday.
