The EU support under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) will cover up to 50 percent of eligible project costs. The total investment in the project will amount to 10.2 mln euros, including 4.7 mln euros by Lithuania, the natural gas transmission system operator said in.  

Laura Sebekiene, head of communications at Amber Grid, said the total investment cost includes the designing cost which is not eligible for EU co-financing.   

"This does not include (...) over 400,000 euros allocated for designing, which is not funded by the EU for us.  When we speak about the total cost of the project, we include the designing cost, too," she told.  

The financing agreement was signed by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agencies (INEA), Amber Grid and Latvia's Conexus Baltic Grid.

In Lithuania, the project will involve increasing the capacity of the Kiemenai gas metering station and reconstructing the gas pipeline's section at the Panevezys compressor station.

On the Latvian side, it is planned to redevelop the trunk pipeline to increase the maximum working pressure from 40 to 50 bar.

The investment will increase the daily gas interconnection capacity up to 130.47 GWh to Latvia, from the current 67.6 GWh, and up to 119.5 GWh to Lithuania, up from 65.1 GWh.
