Liepaja port raises cargo turnover 13.8% in January-November

The port of Liepaja in southwestern Latvia handled 6.893 mln tons of cargo in the first 11 months of this year, which was a 13.8% increase against the same period a year ago, according to the data released by the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Handling of bulk cargos increased by 16.8% y-o-y to 5.226 mln tons, which included 2.782 mln tons of grain, up 22.3% against the first 11 months of 2017 and accounting for 40 % of all cargos reloaded at the port in the 11-month period.


General cargos rose 9.9% y-o-y to 1.264 mln tons and liquid cargos declined 7.5% to 403,300 tons in January-November 2018. Reloading of ro-ro cargos increased by 17.3% y-o-y to 704,100 tons.


Ekers Stividors LP was the port’s leading stevedore company by cargo turnover as it reloaded 2.455 mln tons of cargo in the first 11 months of this year, up 8.4% from the same period in 2017. Liepaja Bulk Terminal was second with 2.13 mln tons, up 37.1%, and Terrabalt came third with 933,500 tons, up 9.3% y-o-y.


In November 2018, cargo handling in Liepaja port was down 20.2% from the same month a year ago to 646,900 tons, which included 494,500 tons of bulk cargo, 116,600 tons of general cargo and 35,800 tons of liquid cargo.


In the 11 months of 2018, Liepaja port handled 1,443 ships, which is 127 ships or 9.6 % more than a year ago, and 44,461 ship passengers, up 15.7%.

Liepaja is the third largest port in Latvia by cargo turnover.
