Balticovo to invest over EUR 8 mln in cage-free egg production in Iecava

Latvia’s Balticovo egg producer plans to invest more than EUR 8 mln to develop cage-free egg production in Iecava, the company’s board member Toms Auskaps told LETA.

In his words, to produce eggs laid by barn hens Balticovo plans to build a facility for 260,000 birds.

“The idea to develop cage-free egg production is based on demand from Scandinavia and Western Europe. In Latvia, demand for such eggs has been rising slightly, but it would be premature to base a business decision on that increase alone. In Iecava, we will build cage free barns and premises for young birds where the chicks will be raised to become laying hens,” said Auskaps.

Balticovo chairman and co-owner Valdis Grimze said that the company is at work on developing cage-free egg production because Balticovo is no longer able to meet the demand for such products in Latvia and foreign markets. The first two cage-free barns should be completed in the second half of 2019, he said.

Grimze added, however, that consumers have to be ready to pay more for cage-free eggs as keeping hens outside cages is much costlier.

As reported, Balticovo egg and egg products producer last year posted EUR 52.3 mln in turnover, up 17.3% from 2016, while the company’s profit reached EUR 10.8 million which is four time bigger than in 2016.

The largest shareholder in Balticovo is BCO company with 95.42%.
