Talks on extending Kiev-Riga train route to Tallinn to begin soon

The Ukrainian state-owned railway company Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) considers the launch of the Kiev-Riga route successful and will begin talks in December with Estonia's national rail company Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) to extend the route to Tallinn, reported LETA/BNS.

Estonian Railways is essentially interested in having the Kiev-Minsk-Vilnius-Riga route extended to Tallinn and discussions on the issue are intended to take place in December, Ukrzaliznytsia said.

"At the moment, trains operating on the line have zero profitability, but taking into account that now is the off-season and the trains have just started running, this particular route may be considered a success," a Ukrzaliznytsia representative said.

The company said that with the eight trips currently made on the route, 2,100 passengers have been carried, 1,000 of whom either traveled to or from Lithuania and 950 to or from Latvia, the company said.

The train on the route Kiev-Minsk-Vilnius-Riga departs once a week and has been operating since Sept. 28.
