In May, 2% more tourists stayed in Estonian hotels
202,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, i.e. 3%
more than in May 2017. In May, 111,000 tourists, or more than a half of the
foreign tourists arrived from Latvia, Finland and Russia. Compared to May of
the previous year, the number of tourists arriving from Latvia, Finland and
Russia decreased by 7%, 3% and 13%, respectively. The number of Finnish
tourists fell for the fourth month in succession compared to the same month of
the previous year. More tourists arrived from Germany, Lithuania, Poland, the
United Kingdom and several other European countries. The number of tourists
arriving from Asian countries continues to increase: in May, there were 6% more
tourists arriving from Asian countries than in the same month a year ago. 69%
of the foreign tourists preferred to stay in the accommodation establishments
of Tallinn. 8% of the foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation
establishments of Pärnu city and 7% in Tartu city. 4% of the foreign tourists
stayed in the accommodation establishments of Ida-Viru county.
102,000 domestic
tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, i.e. 2% more than in May 2017.
61% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 26% on a business trip.
29% of the accommodated domestic tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments
of Harju county, 13% in both Tartu county and Pärnu county and 11% in Ida-Viru
county.
In May, 1,153 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists.
22,000 rooms and 50,000 bed places were available for tourists. 46% of the
rooms and 36% of the bed places were occupied. The average cost of a guest
night was 41 euros, i.e. one euro more than in May 2017. The average cost of a
guest night was 48 euros in Harju county, 35 euros in Tartu county and 31 euros
in both Pärnu county and Ida-Viru county.

The statistics are based on the questionnaire “Accommodation”, the
submission deadline of which was 10 June 2018. Statistics Estonia
published the monthly summary in 19 working days. For the statistical activity
“Accommodation”, the main representative of public interest is the Ministry of
Economic Affairs and Communications, commissioned by whom Statistics Estonia
collects and analyses the data necessary for conducting the statistical
activity.
