The company said a contract was on Monday signed with PKP Cargo, one of the largest railway freight carriers in Poland, allowing Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai to transport the Polish company's cargo to Poland's northeastern cities of Bialystok and Elk.

"It's a historic contract for us as we are starting providing freight transportation services in a foreign market in cooperation with long-term partner PKP Cargo. We will continue developing cooperation and plan to offer more opportunities through the development of the Rail Baltica corridor, and we also see the potential in the development of the Amber Train project," Egidijus Lazauskas, director of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai's Freight Transportation Directorate, said in a statement.

Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai is set to start transporting cargo in Poland since the middle of the next year. Two locomotives will carry container freight, timber, oil and its products, and fertilizers.

PKP Cargo Group is the second-largest railway freight carrier in Europe. Its annual turnover stands at 1.05 billion euros and the company transports 116 million tons of cargo a year.
