Cargo transportation volume up 16.3% in Lithuania in Q1

The volume of goods transported in Lithuania by all means of transport rose to 35.7 million tons in the first quarter of 2018, up 16.3% from the same period last year, new figures from the Statistics Lithuania show, cites LETA/BNS.

The volume of internal cargo grew 13.7% to 13 million tons, and the volume of international freight increased 17.8% to 22.8 million tons.


20.9 million tons were transported by means of road transport, up 20.2%, and 13.3 million tons were carried by railways, up 12.9%. Meanwhile, the volume of cargo carried by sea was down 2.9% to 1.3 million euros.


The majority of railway freight came from and went to Belarus (68.2%), followed by Russia (19.7%), Ukraine (4.8%), Latvia (3%) and Estonia (2%).


Lithuanian haulers transported by the majority of cargo by road to and from Latvia (30.5%), followed by Poland (11.4%), Germany (10.9%) and Estonia (5.6%).
