State-run Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) posted 180 million euros in revenue in the first five months of 2018, up almost 7% from the same period last year, informs LETA/BNS.

The company also reported that it handled 22.3 million tons of cargo, up 11% year-on year, and the number of passengers grew 4.6% to 1.9 million euros.

"We have signed significant contracts with major clients, and passengers can choose new travel destinations, therefore, we see growth in the company's all areas of activity," CEO Mantas Bartuska was quoted as saying in a statement.

In late May, the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian railways companies signed an agreement on the launch of a regular intermodal freight train.

This year, Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai also signed a long-term freight transportation contract with Belarus' Belaruskali, the world's largest producer of potassium fertilizer, and the largest producer of nitric fertilizer Grodno-Azot. The Lithuanian railway company has recently also reached a cooperation agreement with Akmenes Cementas, one of the largest cement producers in the Baltic states and the only producer in Lithuania.
