Number of nights spent by foreign visitors in hotels in Riga grows 12.1% in Q3

During the third quarter of 2017, the number of nights spent by foreign visitors in Latvia's hotels and other tourist facilities grew by 12.1% from the same period in 2016 to 844,687, the Riga Tourism Development Bureau (RTAB) said, citing information from the Latvian Central Statistical Bureau, writes LETA.

The number of tourists visiting Riga in the first nine months of this year has increased by 11.3% to 468,523, with the largest number of foreign visitors coming from Germany, Russia, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania.

 

Most foreign tourists staying at hotels and other tourist facilities in Riga in the third quarter of this year were from Germany (13.9%), Russia (9%), Finland (8%), Estonia and Lithuania (6%), the United Kingdom (5.4%), Sweden (4.7%), Italy (4%), Spain (3.9%) and Norway (3.7%).

 

The steepest growth in the number of tourists from the countries identified by the RTAB as priority target countries was observed for tourists from Lithuania (20.7%), Finland (18.3%), France (18.1%), Spain (17.2%), Sweden (10.7%) and Russia (10%). The number of tourists from the potential target countries grew most steeply in case of China (23.4%) and the United States (10.4%).

 

Vita Jermolovica, the RTAB board chairwoman, said that the number of foreign tourists had increased as a result of various marketing activities by the RTAB which would continue also next year with additional focus on the new destinations served by the Riga airport.

 

The total number of tourist accommodation facilities operating in Riga in the third quarter of 2017 was 137, up by 10 from 2016, and the total number of beds was 16,752 or by nearly 1,000 beds more than last year.

 

As reported, in the second quarter of this year the number of nights spent by foreign guests at hotels and other types of accommodations in Riga, increased 12.3% year-on-year, and the number of foreign tourists grew 12/7% to 393,923.

 

The Riga Tourism Development Office (RTAB) was established in late 2009 by the Riga City Council (70%), the national air carrier airBaltic (10%), the Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association (10%) and the Association of Latvian Tourism Agents (10%) for promotion of tourism and Riga as a tourism destination for foreign travelers.
