Baltic ports increase cargo turnover by 2.6% in January-October

During the first ten months of 2017, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 123.741 million tons of cargo, which was 2.6% or 3.078 million tons more than in the same period last year, informs LETA, according to the data released by the Latvian Central Statistical Bureau.

Of all cargos handled by the Baltic ports in the first ten months of this year, 42% were reloaded in Latvia, 34.7% in Lithuania and 23.2% in Estonia.

 

In January-October 2017, cargo handling increased in the ports of all three Baltic states.

 

The cargo turnover of Latvian ports grew 0.6% or 318,700 tons year-on-year to 52.012 million tons.

 

Meanwhile, Lithuanian ports raised cargo turnover by 5.6% or 2.274 million tons to 42.996 million tons. In Estonia, the ports' annual cargo turnover rose 1.7% or 485,700 tons to 28.732 million tons in January-October 2017.

 

The Lithuanian port of Klaipeda led other Baltic ports by cargo turnover in January-October this year, as it reloaded 35.123 million tons, up 5.5% from the first ten months of 2016.

 

The Freeport of Riga was in second place with 28.103 million tons of cargo reloaded in January-October 2017, down 7.6% year-on-year, and another Latvian port, Ventspils, was third with 17.319 million tons, which was a 12% rise from the first ten months of 2016.

 

In 2016, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 145.943 million tons of cargo, down 2.8% or 4.196 million tons from 2015. Of the total cargo turnover in Baltic ports last year, 43.2% were handled in Latvia, 33.8% in Lithuania and 23% in Estonia.
