Molumba wins architectural competition for Lidl store in Narva

The architectural competition for the building of the German global discount supermarket chain Lidl to be built in Narva, the largest city in northeastern Estonia, was won by the entry of the firm of architects Molumba titled "Blue Velvet," regional newspaper Pohjarannik said, cites LETA/BNS.

OU MMS Property Solutions, Estonian representative of Lidl, on Feb. 21 bought a plot at 7 Tallinn Road in Narva and turned to the Narva city government to receive the necessary design criteria. The current 16-year old detailed plan allows for the construction of a two to four-storey commercial building and the city government demanded that the owner organize an architectural competition.

Narva city architect Ivan Sergejev said that this is the preliminary vision of the store and added that the winners are to continue work on the project. Altogether 10 entries were submitted.

The property was owned by Lidl Eesti OU already in 2004-2006, when the German supermarket chain planned to start operating in Estonia. But nothing came of those plans then and the property was sold to Tallinna Kaubamaja Grupp, but the group did not launch construction there either.

MMS Property Solutions belongs to the Lidl group and the direct owner company of the company founded last October is the German CE Beteiligungs GmbH. Lidl planned to expand to Estonia 10 years ago through the same company.

MMS Property Solutions this year also both properties in Tartu and Tallinn. Lauri Sipponen, head of Lidl in Finland, told the Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti in September that the retail chain is planning to open stores in Estonia and Latvia in 2020.
