During the first ten months of 2017, the stevedore companies based in the southwestern Latvian port of Liepaja reloaded 5.25 million tons of cargo in total, which was a 15.3% rise from the same period a year ago, Liga Ratniece-Kadege, a spokeswoman for the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ), told LETA.

The port of Liepaja also handled 1,192 ships and 35,581 ship passengers in the ten months of this year.

Bulk cargo made up 73%, general cargo 20% and liquid cargo 7% of all cargo reloaded in Liepaja in the first ten months of 2017.

In October 2017, cargo handling at the port of Liepaja was hampered by rainy and windy weather, which is why the monthly cargo turnover was smaller than this year’s monthly average but still higher than the monthly average in 2016. In October 2017, Liepaja port handled 494,178 tons of cargo, 118 ships and 3,642 passengers of outbound ships.
