Overall grain harvest in 2017 in Latvia is good enough

BC, Riga, 24.10.2017.Print version
The overall grain harvest in Latvia in 2017 is good enough so Latvia will not have to import grain, Farmers' Saeima Chairman Juris Lazdins told Latvian Television yesterday, reports LETA.

"The overall grain harvest in Latvia is good enough so we would not have to consider buying grain," said Lazdins.

The harvest is over on most farms, but work is still under way on a few farms in Latvia. "This fall has been especially bad to Latvian farmers. We did what we could, but harvest is still continuing, said Lazdins.

He also said that farmers who were afflicted by heavy rains and floods would have approximately 71% of their investments compensated from the government's emergency funds.

"The total area of fields where harvest was impossible or was destroyed is 73,000 hectares. According to our estimates, farmers' losses have amounted to about EUR 50 million. So far, less than EUR 15 million has been allotted to compensate for part of farmers' investments," said Lazdins.
