Fonterra opens path for Lithuanian Rokiskio Suris' mozzarella to China

Rokiskio Suris (Rokiskis Cheese), one of Lithuania's biggest dairy companies, will soon export more than 800 tons of mozzarella to China, with the deal facilitated by New Zealand's Fonterra that recently invested in the Lithuanian enterprise, informs LETA/BNS.

"We have been trying to sell to China and we were not very successful until now. Lithuania has had the permit for nearly two years. Now we managed to agree on a very big contract, only with the help of Fonterra and through their channels and assurance to the Chinese side that we are a good and serious company. We no longer need to prove this and send test batches," Dalius Trumpa, board chairman at Rokiskio Suris, told BNS.

In his words, the deal with buyers in China has already been finalized, with the first shipment of production to be sent before the end of this week.

Three Lithuanian dairy companies export to China: Rokiskio Suris exported 300 tons of lactose in March, Vilkyskiu Pienine sold around 20 tons of mozzarella in January and Marijampoles Pieno Konservai (Marijampole Canned Milk) exported about 100 tons of condensed unsweetened milk in July.

On Oct. 13, Rokiskio Suris signed a contract with Fonterra to sell about a tenth of its shares for more than 7 million euros. Fonterra takes 85% of New Zealand's milk production and processing market.
