Tallinn Airport passenger numbers surge by quarter in September
The number of passengers in the first nine months of the year was bigger by more than 300,000 or 18% than in the same period last year. The two-million-passenger mark was crossed at Tallinn Airport on Oct. 1, compared with Nov. 19 last year, the state owned airport company said on Friday.
Eero Pargmae, chief commercial officer (CCO) of the airport company, said that while passenger numbers in September were boosted in part by the events related to the Estonian presidency of the EU, in the full-year the number of passengers related to the presidency events makes up less than one-tenth of total growth, the rest being the general increase in the numbers of business travelers and tourists.
Rapid growth continued in September also in charter flights, where boardings increased by 33% over September 2016. The new destinations gaining popularity alongside the traditional favorites like Antalya, Iraklion and Varna are cities like Tivat in Montenegro or Pula in Croatia.
In September Vueling ended seasonal flights between Tallinn and Barcelona for this season. Also the Tallinn-Berlin and Tallinn-Rijeka services of Nordica came to an end for this year.
In October regular flights are operated out of Tallinn to 34 different destinations.
