4% more tourists stay at Estonian hotels in August
In August 2017, there were
18,000 tourists more using the services of accommodation establishments of
Estonia than in the same month of the previous year. The number of foreign and
domestic tourists increased by 3% and 7%, respectively, compared to August 2016.
Foreign tourists accounted for 60% of the total number of tourists. In August
2017, a total of 263,000 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation
establishments. 78% of the foreign tourists came from EU countries, 8% from
Russia and 5% from Asian countries. 165,000 foreign tourists, i.e. 63% of the
foreign tourists who used accommodation services stayed in the accommodation
establishments of Tallinn. The second most popular destination was Pärnu city,
accounting for 10% of all accommodated foreign tourists, followed by Tartu
city, which accounted for 7% of the accommodated foreign tourists. Saare county
accounted for 5% and Ida-Viru county for 3% of the foreign tourists who used
accommodation services. Most (77%) of the foreign tourists were on a holiday
and 17% on a business trip and the rest had some other reason for visiting
Estonia.
40% of the customers of
accommodation establishments were domestic tourists. In August 2017, the number
of domestic tourists using the services of accommodation establishments was
172,000, of which 67% were on a holiday and 18% on a business trip. 21% of the
accommodated domestic tourists stayed in Harju county, 13% in Pärnu county, 10%
in Tartu county and 8% in both Ida-Viru county and Saare county.
In August, 1,357 accommodation
establishments offered services for tourists. 24,000 rooms and 56,000 beds were
available for tourists. 55% of the rooms and 46% of the beds were occupied. The
average cost of a guest night was 38 euros, i.e. the same as in August 2016.
The average cost of a guest night was 46 euros in Harju county, 37 euros in
Pärnu county, 32 euros in Ida-Viru county and 31 euros in both Tartu county and
Saare county.

based on the questionnaire “Accommodation”, the submission deadline of which
was 10 September 2017. Statistics Estonia published the monthly summary in
19 working days. For the statistical activity “Accommodation”, the main
representative of public interest is the Ministry of Economic Affairs and
Communications, commissioned by whom Statistics Estonia collects and analyses
the data necessary for conducting the statistical activity.
