The Icelandic air carrier Primera Air with the headquarters in Riga, Latvia, carried 700,800 passengers in the first eight months of this year, which is a 23.4 percent rise from the same period in 2016, the airline informed LETA.

Primera Air expects the annual number of passengers to top one million in 2017.

"Introduction of three fare classes for European flights, developing the most popular routes and closing the unprofitable routes are the main reasons for the record-high results of Primera Air this year," the airline said, noting that, with the steep growth in recent years, it was determined to take the segment of Transatlantic flights between Europe and the United States.

In January-August this year Primera Air increased its total revenue by 16.3% year-on-year, and its revenue per available seat-kilometer (RASK) grew 12.1%. Revenue from additional products and services purchased by passengers rose 3.11% to EUR 9.36 million. The airline also improved its load factor to 87%.

As reported, Primera Air this year announced that it will launch flights from Riga to Costa del Sol, Malaga, in Spain next year, and will also start flying to New York and Boston from its new operating bases in London, Paris and Birmingham in 2018.

Primera Air was founded in 2004 in Iceland and initially operated charter flights for Scandinavian tour operators. In 2014 Primera Air moved their headquarters from Denmark to Latvia and expanded its operations with direct seat sales and a push into the low-cost air travel segment. Primera Air flies to more than 70 destinations using eight Boeing Next Generation aircraft. Primera Air is part of Primera Travel Group, which includes the leading travel agencies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
