Cargo turnover of Baltic ports up 4.2% in 8 months

All Baltic ports together handled 100.461 million tons of cargo in January-August this year, up 4.2% or 4.031 million tons from the same period in 2016, reports LETA, according to the data released by the Latvian Central Statistical Bureau.

Of all cargos handled by the Baltic ports in the first seven months of this year, 42.9% were reloaded in Latvia, 33.9% in Lithuania and 23.3% in Estonia.

 

Compared to the first eight months of 2016, all three Baltic states showed growth of cargo turnover at their ports in January-August 2017.

 

The cargo turnover of the Latvian ports rose 4.8% or 1.956 million tons year-on-year to 43.064 million tons in January-August this year.

 

Lithuanian ports raised cargo turnover by 5.3% or 1.71 million tons to 34.062 million tons. In Estonia, the ports' annual cargo turnover was up 1.6% or 362,100 tons to 23.372 million tons in January-August 2017.

 

The Lithuanian port of Klaipeda led other Baltic ports by cargo turnover in January-August this year, as it reloaded 27.697 million tons, up 4.8% from the first eight months of 2016.

 

Latvia's Riga port was in the second place with 22.711 million tons of cargo reloaded in January-August 2017, down 4.9% year-on-year, and another Latvian port, Ventspils, was third with 15.064 million tons, which was a rise by 17.2% from the first eight months of 2016.

 

In 2016, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 145.943 million tons of cargo, down 2.8% or 4.196 million tons from 2015. Of the total cargo turnover in Baltic ports last year, 43.2% were handled in Latvia, 33.8% in Lithuania and 23% in Estonia.
