Latvian motocross rider Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was crowned the 2017 MX2 World Champion on Sunday, informs LETA.

At the French Grand Prix, Jonass had to finish 12th or highest in Race 1 to take the title. However, he went down after colliding with another rider at the start of the race, then fell again. Nevertheless, Jonass made up his way to sixth place to win the championship. In Race 2, Jonass finished third (and fifth overall).

Thomas Covington (United States) finished first overall at the MXGP of Montbeliard, Hunter Lawrence (Australia) was second and Jed Beaton (Australia) third.

In the final championship standings, Jonass was first with 771 points to his name, Jeremy Seewer (Switzerland) placed second with 732 points, and Thomas Kjer Olsen (Denmark) was third with 479 points.

Jonass was the overall winner at six events of the MX2 World Championship this season.

Jonass closed the previous championship in fifth place, while in 2015 he placed second.
