Latvia’s leading tennis player and this year’s French Open winner Alona Ostapenko is in tenth position in the updated WTA ranking, which has been released yesterday, thus becoming the first Latvian ever to make it to the WTA Top ten, informs LETA.

Garbine Muguruza of Spain has become the new WTA No. 1 for the first time in her career.

Latvia’s best male tennis player Ernests Gulbis spent a few weeks at the Top 10 of the ATP ranking in 2014.

Ostapenko held the 12th position on the WTA ranking before the US Open and has now advanced to the tenth spot.

At the US Open, Ostapenko reached the third round where she was eliminated by Daria Kasatkina of Russia.

Meanwhile, Latvia’s No. 2 tennis player Anastasija Sevastova has dropped one position to 18th place in the WTA ranking after her defeat in the US Open quarter-final match against Sloane Stephens.
