Lithuanians interested in planned European dairy product marketplace

With Global Dairy Trade planning to set up an auction mechanism for European dairy products, Rokiskio Suris, a leading Lithuanian dairy producer, says that it will consider selling its products on the marketplace, informs LETA/BNS.

Global Dairy Trade, a subsidiary of New Zealand-based Fonterra, one of the world's largest dairy companies, and the European Energy Exchange (EEX) have recently signed a letter of intent "to evaluate the possibility of working together to set up and operate an auction mechanism for dairy products originating in Europe".

Rokiskio Suris Chairman Dalius Trumpa told BNS that the Lithuanian company would be interested in having another sales channel.

"Certainly, it will depend on all the rules and how that marketplace evolves, but our company makes products for exports in large quantities and I think that another sales channel would benefit us," he said.

Rokiskio Suris announced last week that a preliminary agreement had been reached with Fonterra on the acquisition of a 10 percent stake in the Lithuanian company.
