Latvia's export of information and communications technology (ICT) services amounted to EUR 137 million in the first quarter of the year 2017, which is 18% more than in the first quarter of 2016, according to the Bank of Latvia's data.

Latvia's export of ICT services has been steadily increasing, Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association's President Signe Balina commented.

"Last year we passed the railroad industry, and in the first quarter of this year we drew close to the financial services industry," said Balina, emphasizing though that ICT was not a rival to other industries.

The ICT sector has increased substantially in the past several years. The Central Statistical Bureau's data also show that the number of employees in ICT has increased 58% over the past few years. In 2008, 18,900 people worked in the ICT industry, while this year there are more than 30,000 people working in ICT, Balina informed.

However, the number of vacancies in the ICT sector is still very significant, added Balina.
