Estonian medicines market expands 2% to EUR 74.7 mln in Q2

The volume of the Estonian human and veterinary medicines market in the second quarter of 2017 increased 2% to 74.7 million euros, reports LETA/BNS.

The value of medicines provided by wholesalers to general pharmacies totaled 51.8 million euros, the value of medicines provided to hospital pharmacies 22.2 million euros and the value of medicines provided to other institutions amounted to 700,000 euros, figures from the State Agency of Medicines show.


Prescription drugs accounted for the largest part of the turnover at 64.4 million euros, while over the counter sales and hospital package sales accounted for 9.8 million euros and 500,000 euros, respectively.


Based on anatomical therapeutic chemical (ATC) classification, the most sold medicines by turnover were antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents with 15.5 million euros, antiinfectives for systemic use with 11 million euros and alimentary tract and metabolism medicines with 8.8 million euros.


The volume of the veterinary medicines market in the second quarter of 2017 at wholesale prices was 3.4 million euros, 7.5% more than in the second quarter of last year.


Almost 85% of veterinary medicines were sold to veterinarians or to agricultural companies represented by a veterinarian, 9% to general pharmacies, 5% to veterinary pharmacies and 1% to other institutions, generally state and scientific institutions.


The most sold medicines by turnover were antiparasitic products with 960,000 euros, antiinfectives for systemic use with 780,000 euros and immunologicals with 720,000 million euros. In the past two years, sales of antiparasitic products in the second quarter have significantly exceeded the sales of antiinfectives and cover more than a quarter of the volume of the veterinary medicines market.medicines
