Altogether 7.1 million tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of the state-owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) in the first seven months of 2017, 4.7% less than in the same period last year, while carriage in July grew 7.5% on year to 856,000 tons, reports LETA/BNS.

"The positive trend of the past few months lets us expect that the carriage of goods on our infrastructure is stabilizing and this year's volume will remain around last year's volume," CEO of the Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) Erik Laidvee said.

"We are actively cooperating with our existing customers as well as new ones and are constantly dealing with new projects to increase carriage volumes," he added.

Passenger carriage is constantly growing on the infrastructure of Estonian Railways. In the first seven months of the year 4.2 million passengers were carried, which is 5.6% more than in the same period last year. In July 582,100 passengers were carried, 4.1% more than in July 2016.

"The number of passengers has seen a stable growth of around 5% in the past few years, and as a result of our railway renovation and development projects it is definitely possible to hold and increase this growth trend in coming years," Laidvee said.
