More than 14,000 jobless Latvians receive support under the Youth Guarantee program
She said that by 2018, support will provided in total to 19,000 unemployed,
aged 15-29.
According to Simsone, most often young people are unemployed because of
their education level as only 16 percent of the program’s participants have
higher educations, 32 percent have professional education, 26 percent have
general secondary education, 23 percent have elementary education and 3 percent
had not completed even elementary education level.
Welfare Minister Janis Reirs
(Unity) said in a press conference that the Youth Guarantee project helps to
break the vicious circle when a young person may not get a job because of the
lack of experience, while experience cannot be obtained if there is no job.
Reirs reminded that the Youth Guarantee project has been successful in
Latvia, and the EU suspended further financing to Latvia for the project
because Latvia’s youth unemployment level is not above the average in the EU
any more. The youth unemployment level in Latvia has dropped to 18%.
The minister also said that the State Employment Agency and the Welfare
Ministry have reached an agreement that the EU project will continue until the
end of next year, and after that it will be continued on the national level and
the state budget will finance support to the young unemployed people.
The total financing in the Youth Guarantee program in 2014-2018 is EUR
33,977,163.
