Estonian police to use new jetskis at sea, on transboundary water bodies

BC, Tallinn, 21.07.2017.Print version
The new Guardrunner jetski rescue craft of the Estonia Police and Border Guard Board will be stationed on patrol boats, which are currently being built, and the jetskis will be used at sea and on transboundary bodies of water, informs LETA/BNS.

"The Police and Border Guard Board next year will receive three new jetskis, which will be kept on three new patrol boats," Marge Kohtla, lead law enforcement official at the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, told BNS.

"Three jetskis will be added to the ten already purchased, which are located at the border checkpoints and on the border guard boat Kindral Kurvits. Two of the new jetskis will be located on the 17-meter cabin launches, while the third will be on a new multifunctional patrol boat," Kohtla said.

"The Police and Border Guard is currently carrying out training for the use of the jetskis. The craft have been built specifically for patrolling and solving rescue incidents. The advantage of the jetskis is a low draught, which makes it possible to carry out tasks also in shallow waters," Kohtla said.

"They allow access to rocky coasts, which the Police and Border Guard Board had been unable to reach from sea so far. The jetskis are able to dock and be set afloat in places not build to do so. They can also be used to quickly react to events concerning the guarding of the state border. The jetskis will be used both on transboundary water bodies and at sea," Kohtla said.

The Guardrunner craft measuring 3.6 meters in length and featuring a 1.5 square meter built-in aft platform has a dry weight of 385 kilograms and a load capacity of 365 kilograms. Its maximum speed is 38 knots or 70 kmh.

The procurement is co-financed by the European Union through the Internal Security Fund and the Estonian Ministry of Interior, while the purchase of the new boat will be financed by the Estonian government and EU Cohesion Fund.

The Swedish company Safe at Sea AB on Wednesday announced that Baltic Workboats in cooperation with the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board have placed an order for three Guardrunner jetski rescue craft and one Rescuerunner Cradle launch, the value of the order is approximately 160,000 euros.
