In May this year cargo turnover by ferries at Latvia’s southwestern Liepaja port increased by 49.4 %, Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) spokeswoman Liga Ratniece-Kedege reported LETA.

The stable flow of ro-ro cargos in Liepaja is ensured by a regular ferry line with German port Travemunde. For a second month the ferry arrives at the port five times a week, and it has promoted increase of cargo turnover. In May this year it reached 59,900 tons, up 49.4 % from a year ago.

Terrabalt stevedore’s board chairman Aris Ozolins said that cargo transportation by ferry is developing. In cooperation with Stena Line ferry operator and Liepaja Special Economic Zone administration, a new project has been started to improve organization of cargo flows by ferry. Ozolins said that investments are necessary in Liepajas SEZ and Terrabalt infrastructure, and then intensity of the ferries will increase.

As reported, in the first five months of this year terminals operating at Liepaja port reloaded 2,890,588 tons of cargo, which is by 24.7% more than in the respective period last year.

Liepaja port also served 621 ships and 11,716 ship passengers in the said period.
