Ostapenko triumphs at French Open

Latvian lady tennis player Alona Ostapenko today rewrote the Latvian sports history, triumphing at the final of the French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament.

The 20-year old Ostapenko defeated the strong Romanian player Simona Halep with 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.


This is Latvia's biggest achievement in sports so far.

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said in his Twitter post that Ostapenko’s achievements are based on hard work, her character and vigor. "It is our Alona Ostapenko! I am proud of her!" said Vejonis, adding that she has demonstrated a unique achievement in Latvian sports.


Saeima speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) also congratulated the Latvian tennis player. She said in her Twitter post: "I congratulate Alona Ostapenko on her historical triumph at the French Open. A great joy and achievement for Latvia!"


Latvia’s ex-prime minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) also voiced happiness and pride on her Twitter post: "A Latvian girl surprised the tennis world and not only that! We are proud!"

Several parliament lawmakers, ministers and Riga City Council lawmakers have also praised Ostapenko’s victory.
