The Latvian Investment and Development Agency today signed an agreement on long term tourism cooperation with Alibaba Group on China’s largest travel website Alitrip to promote Latvian businesses on the Chinese market, LETA was told at the government agency.

Under the cooperation agreement, information about Latvia and tourism opportunities in Latvia will be placed on Alitrip to raise Latvia’s profile and provide a broader choice of services to clients in China. For Latvian tour operators, the platform means an opportunity to develop specific tourism services in collaboration with the Chinese.

“The far-away markets, and the Asian market in particular, have been showing steady, improving results lately. Asian tour operators are looking for new destinations in Europe. Cooperation with Alibaba Group and its travel arm Alitrip will give the Latvian Investment and Development Agency and Latvian tourism companies unprecedented opportunities to promote Latvia in the Asian region and the world, helping [tourists] choose Latvia as their destination,” said the agency’s director Andris Ozols.

The Latvian Investment and Development Agency’s representatives said that the agency together with the relevant ministries is working to make the processing of Chinese tourists’ visa applications faster.

According to the Latvian Investment and Development Agency’s information, Alitrip has 250 million clients in its database. Tour operators will now be able to use Alitrip to offer trips to Latvia to all these people. The only other European countries represented on Alitrip include France, Germany, the UK, Finland and Denmark.
