The Estonian telecommunications company Starman will on Wednesday open a new generation residental internet fiber network based on Nokia Networks' Ethernet Passive Optical Network (10G EPON) targeting speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second, reoports LETA/BNS.

Starman and Nokia started customer trials of the 10G network in December.

"Starman and Nokia Fixed Networks are developing the 10G EPON innovative fiber network that is unique in Europe first and foremost with the future of internet use in mind," Jaanus Erlemann, technology director at Starman Grupp.

He said that Starman started lab tests of the next generation 10 Gbps network with its technology partner as the first operator in Europe in September 2015, achieving residential internet speeds of up to 8.6 Gbps.

Erlemann also has said that the partners have set their sights on solutions that can allow for symmetrical connections greater than 1 Gbps, enabling them to skip some current technological developments and take a seat on the new high-speed 10G train.
