Telia to invest EUR 40 mln in replacing ADSL networks

BC, Tallinn, 09.05.2017.Print version
The Estonian operation of the Scandinavian telecom group Telia is about to replace the ADSL connections in service since the beginning of this century with optical connections allowing speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) and VDSL2 copper cables over the next three and a half years for an investment of 40 mln euros, informed LETA\BNS.

Toivo Praakel, network development director at Telia Estonia, said that 40 mln euros includes both the cost of equipment as well as labor costs. He said the plan is to switch to optical connections in Tallinn, Tartu, Johvi and Parnu, and to replace outdated connections with new technologies in the rest of Estonia.

Praakel said that to a large part copper cables and optical commentions will be preserved, as the existing infrastructure possesses data transmission capability.

The new XGS-PON optical link enables a symmetrical connection of up to 10 Gbps for corporate customers and a symmetrical connection of up to 1 Gbps for household customers. VDSL2 theoretically enables asymmetrical download speeds of up to 400 megabits per second and realistically of up to 250 Mbps for the end user, Roland Pauklin, network development manager at Telia, said.

The present copper connections enable speeds of up to 60 Mbps, Pauklin added.
