Rail freight in Latvia up 8.1% in Q1

Freight transportation using the Latvian railway infrastructure amounted to 14.1 million tons in the first three of this year, up 8.1% from the same period in 2016, the state-owned railway company Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDz) said LETA.
In the first quarter of the year, LDz carried 6.2 mln tons
of coal, which was a 62% increase on the
same period last year.
Import cargos carried by rail in January-March 2017 added up
to 12.5 mln tons at a 7.8% rise from the same period in 2016, export cargos
fell 36% to 384,000 tons.
Rail freight in March totaled 4.8 mln tons, up 12.8% y-o-y.
The amount of coal carried by rail in March grew 64% reaching 2.2 mln tons.
Transportation of oil and oil products by rail accounted for
4.3 mln tons in the first three months of the year, which is a drop by 17% y-o-y.
