A delegation from Japan's largest airline All Nippon Airways (ANN) arrived at Riga International Airport today to get acquainted with the airport and its infrastructure, as well as its suitability to handle inter-continental flights between Riga and Japan, LETA was informed by the airport.

During the visit, ANA representative Koji Hagiwara expressed interest whether or not the airport has the necessary infrastructure to service large aircraft, including the capacity of the airport's refueling system, anti-ice equipment, as well as whether or not the airport's passenger terminal is capable of handling high intensity passenger flows.

After the visit, the ANA representatives praised that airport's readiness to receive long-haul flights.

''I am very happy that the extensive investments made into the development of the airport's infrastructure in recent years has made Riga Airport attractive for such global airlines as ANN. The development of a network of inter-continental and transit flights is one of the airport's main development strategy priorities, with the aim of strengthening Riga as the leading air-traffic hub in the Baltics,'' the airport's board chairwoman Ilona Lice said.

Fully owned by the Latvian state, Riga International Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltics, serving 45% of the air passengers in the Baltic States. The 20 airlines operating at Riga Airport offer 60 destinations in the winter season and 80 in the summer season.
