Latvian Transport Minister Uldis Augulis (Greens/Farmers) today met with the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Latvia, Afzal Artikov, and they discussed the ongoing cooperation and opportunities for further cooperation opened up by Latvia's activities and the 16+1 cooperation format between Central and Eastern European countries and China, the Latvian Transport Ministry said.

Augulis underlined the need to increase the number of flights on the route Tashkent-Riga-New York, saying that the route operated by Uzbekistan Airways was very popular among passengers from Latvia, who wanted to go to the United States. The ambassador confirmed great interest in the route on part of passengers and said that Uzbekistan Airways would add the second weekly flight on the route in early April with the beginning of the summer season.

Rail freight volumes between the two countries increased 16.9% in 2016 compared to 2015, and there also was a 6% rise in container freight transportation by rail. The Uzbek ambassador said the last year had been successful in terms of freight transportation but there was still untapped potential for this kind of cooperation. Among other things, transportation of textiles could be increased.

Artikov called on Augulis to join forces to expand cooperation with China, pointing out the opportunities that would open in rail freight transit through Uzbekistan, with the use of a newly-built railway stretch in Kyrgyzstan and by participation in transportation along the Trans-Caucasus corridor linking Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia with Europe. Additional opportunities will be created by the agreements on cooperation along the rail route Hankou-Almaty-Tashkent-Istanbul-Paris and about development of a transport and transit corridor between Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the ambassador said.

The Latvian transport minister spoke about Latvia's potential and the offer for distribution of goods to the Scandinavian countries via Latvian ports. The Uzbek ambassador confirmed that companies in Uzbekistan were interested in those opportunities and planned to make use of Latvia's offer.

He also invited the Latvian transport minister to visit Tashkent in the first half of 2018 to attend an international logistics and transport conference.
