oday the European Commission launched the 2017 edition of the European Enterprise Promotion Awards, a competition to reward the most imaginative and successful initiatives from public bodies and public-private partnerships that support entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe, EC announced.

The nominations are now open and national competitions will soon be launching across EU Member States as well as Iceland, Serbia and Turkey. Before the deadline of 3 July, each state will select their national winners to compete at the European level. The participants' ultimate aim is to win the Grand Jury Prize or one of the category awards at the SME Assembly in Tallinn, in November 2017.

The five active entry categories in 2017 are:

  • Promoting entrepreneurial spirit
  • Investing in entrepreneurial skills
  • Improving the business environment
  • Supporting the internationalisation of businesses
  • Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship.

How to participate:

The competition has two stages; applicants must first compete at the national level before becoming eligible to compete at the European level. For the national competition, each country will select two entries to be nominated for the European competition by 3 July.

A shortlist of nominees will then be selected by the European jury and published by the end of September. All shortlisted nominees from the national and European competitions will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at the 2017 SME Assembly on 23 November in Tallinn, at which the winners can present their projects in a pan-European environment.

Background:

Since 2006, the European Enterprise Promotion Awards have rewarded excellence in promoting entrepreneurship and small business at a national, regional and local level. Over 3400 projects have entered the competition since the awards were launched and together they have supported the creation of thousands of new companies. The Awards’ objectives are to recognise successful activities and initiatives to promote enterprise and entrepreneurship, showcase and share examples of best entrepreneurship policies and practices, create a greater awareness of the role entrepreneurs play in European society, and encourage and inspire potential entrepreneurs.
