Freight shipping by rail in Latvia up 4.6% in January

In January 2017, freight shipping by rail in Latvia accelerated 4.6% from the same period a year ago to 4.8 mln tons, the state-owned Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railways, LDz) railway company reported.

In the first month of this year shipping of coal by rose 57.6% y-o-y to 2.1 mln tons, while oil and oil product cargos declined 21.1% to 1.5 mln tons.


Shipping of mineral fertilizers by rail fell 18.3% from January 2016 to 308,000 tons in January of this year, and chemical cargos contracted 28.7% to 117,000 tons.


The segment of ferrous metals, meanwhile, continued to show growth in January 2017 as shipping of these cargos increased by 89.9% to 98,000 tons. Shipping of timber also quickened by 8.4%, rising from 107,000 tons a year ago to 116,000 in January 2017.


Ore cargos, which Latvijas Dzelzcels started handling at the end of last year, reached 84,000 tons in January.


Import shipments rose 6%  y- o-y to 4.3 mln tons in January, export cargo transportation fell 29.2% to 148,000 tons and domestic cargo transportation was down 7.7% to 96,000 tons.


As reported, freight transportation by railway in Latvia fell 14%, or 7.8 mln tons, to 47.8 mln tons in 2016.
