The Estonian domestic passenger train operator Elron registered 6.2 mln boardings in the first 11 months of 2016, 3.3 % more than in the same period last year and the total number of boardings to be made by the end of the year is to total 6.8 mln, the company said LETA/BNS.

According to Elron CEO Andrus Ossip, the main reasons behind the increase of boardings are a busier schedule, longer trains and higher speeds. "The goal set for 2020 in the transport development plan is 8.8 mln boardings a year and we are working toward that," Ossip said.

At present 5 boardings per resident is made in Estonia each year, while the European average is 17 boarding per resident, Ossip said.

This year Elron's most popular routes are Tallinn-Paldiski, Tallinn-Tartu, Tallinn-Riisipere, Tallinn-Aegviidu and Tallinn-Keila.

In the 11 months Elron earned 11.1 mln euros from ticket sales, 2.7% more than in the same period in 2015. Ticket revenue covered 32% of all costs.

Elron is planning to make investments worth 830,000 euros next year, of which 52 % is to go toward increasing the comfort and safety of passengers, and 48 % toward maintenance of trains and the depot.

The state-owned Elron, or Eesti Liinirongid AS, became the operator of all subsidized domestic train services in Estonia from the start of 2014. The company has 327 employees.
