Rail freight in Latvia grows 7.6% y-o-y in November

In November this year, freight transportation using the Latvian railway infrastructure increased 7.6 % from November 2015 to 4.46 mln tons, the state-owned railway company Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDz) said LETA.

Coal transportation in November rose 28.7%  y-o-y, with LDZ subsidiary, rail freight carrier LDz Cargo, reloading record-large amounts of coal - over 1,100 tons a day - at Krasta station in Riga on several occasions.


Land transit grew 61.2% to 150,000 tons in November this year, import cargos grew 10.4% y-o-y but export cargos decreased.


In the first eleven months of this year, 42.88 mln tons were carried by rail, down 15.6% from the same period in 2015. Of these, 1.38 mln tons were domestic cargos, or by 10.3% less than in January-November 2015. Export cargos fell 18.5% to 12.6 mln tons, and import cargos decreased 14.1% y-o-y to 37.67 mln tons.


Transportation of oil products by rail accounted for 15.45 mln tons this year, which is a drop by 22.5% y-o-y. Coal was transported in the amount of 13.7 mln tons or by 21.1 % less than in the eleven month-period last year. Transportation of ferrous metals rose by 37.8% to 1.64 mln tons, while transportation of timber increased 4.6% to 1.4 mln tons and transportation of mineral fertilizers grew 2.3% to 3.51 mln tons.
