BC, Riga, 28.11.2016.Print version
In the latest Climate Change Performance index, Latvia received the highest score among the Baltic states, the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry informed LETA.

Latvia in the index received 60.20 points, being assessed as "good", and this puts Latvia in the 15th position among the world countries. Lithuania got the 19th position and Estonia’s performance has been assessed as "very poor", ranking it in the 50th place.

The index covered 58 countries which together are responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The index includes five indicators – emissions level (30% of total assessment), development of emissions level (30%), renewable energy (10%), efficiency (10%), and climate policy (20%).

In some categories Latvia has been ranked as high as in the fifth position - for emissions from deforestation per capita, in the assessment of share of renewable energy in total primary energy supply Latvia was ranked eighth, while in the carbon dioxide emissions per capita Latvia was ranked tenth.

France got the highest score in the index, but it did not rank first. As the authors of the index said, none of the countries has received the maximum score, and none achieved the positions one to three because no country is doing enough to prevent dangerous climate change. Thus, France ranked fourth with a score of 66.17 points. The lowest scores were recorded for Kazakhstan, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
