Foreign tourists spent EUR 430 mln in Estonia in Q3

Foreign tourists made more than two million visits to Estonia in the third quarter of 2016 and spent 430 mln euros here, 10 mln euros more than in the third quarter of 2015, the central bank said on Wednesday.

Residents of Estonia made 1 mln trips abroad in the third quarter, about as many as in the third quarter of 2015. One in five of these trips took an Estonian resident outside the EU. The number of trips made by Estonian residents to Turkey halved and the number of trips to France and the UK dropped 14%. The number of trips to Greece meanwhile increased 21%, the number of trips to Ukraine was up by 20% and the number of trips to Bulgaria and Croatia by 12%  and 11%, respectively.


Estonian residents spent an estimated 200 mln euros in other countries in the third quarter.

There were over 700,000 visits to Estonia from Finland in the third quarter, accounting for one-thrid of the total number of trips by foreigners here. The number of visits by residents of all neighboring countries of Estonia grew compared with the third quarter of 2015. Increases were registered also in the number of arrivals from Spain and the United States, which both grew by one-tenth year over year.


One in two foreign visitors stayed in Estonia overnight and the average duration of the stay of a foreign visitor was 4.5 days, unchanged from a year ago.
