Tallinn airport eyeing growth in air freight volumes

Looking for additional opportunities to generate revenue is a must for Tallinn Airport and the company has set its sights on increasing air freight volumes, the manager of the state owned airport company, Piret Murk-Dubout said LETA/BNS.

"More than 16,000 tons of freight was transported via the airport last year. There's a possibility here to multiply this volume – these are possibilities that we are charting with freight transporters right now," told Murk-Dubout told.

All airports in the region are interested in boosing freight volumes, especially when it comes to goods arriving from China, the manager of Tallinn Airport said.

"Lithuania and Latvia are very actively developing air freight transport on the level of the state. However, the big advantage Estonia has is Omniva's cooperation with the Chinese company SF Express. Their Post11 already now brings goods from China to the Tallinn airport and delivers them to clients not only in Estonia but also in the Nordic countries and Russia," she said.

Tallinn Airport is a landlord type of infrastructure company that develops and maintains a capability to serve freight transporting companies, but leaves handling the goods to the latter, Murk-Dubout said.

The expansion of the airport will create additional opportunities for intensifying cargo traffic. "We will be able to build more hangars and warehouses and sorting facilities in the airport's territory. Our location is unique logistically - there's a railway and major roads near the airport, the sea port is just 18 kilometers from us," the manager said.
