Estonia's Omniva doubles number of parcel terminals in Latvia

BC, Riga, 26.09.2016.Print version
As a result of an increase in the number of online shoppers Estonia's state-owned postal company doing business under the Omniva name will open 30 new parcel terminals in Latvia which is twice as much as initially planned, reports LETA.

By installing 15 additional parcel terminals in Latvia this year the company increases its parcel terminal network in Latvia by 54% and in the Baltic countries by 35%. While initially the company planned to open 15 terminals in Latvia, the company recently decided to expand even faster and double the number of new parcel terminals. The installing of new terminals is to start in Riga as well as other regions in Latvia at the end of September, Omniva said.

According the Ansi Arumeel, a member of Omniva's board, the company already has the biggest parcel terminal network in the Baltic countries with more than 28,000 parcel slots, but the company is still planning to expand even more in the Baltics.

By the end of 2016 Omniva's network of parcel terminals will have grown by 20 terminals in Estonia, 22 in Lithuania and 30 in Latvia or by about a third.

While most of Latvia's parcel volumes are made up of business customers, recently sudden growth has been detected also in the segment of parcels of private customers. Therefore the company expects the parcels of private customers to soon make up 50% of the total parcel volume.

Results of Eurostat show that the number of online shoppers is increasing in all age groups in Europe. Last year 59% of Estonia's internet users bought products or services online. In Latvia and Lithuania the indicator was respectively 38% and 32%, but it is quickly increasing.

In 2017 Omniva is to grant access to its parcel terminal network to other Baltic partners to further advance the fast development of online trade.
