In an effort to expand the map of direct flights from Lithuania, around 1 mln euros has been earmarked for support to foreign airlines, up to 200,000 euros per carrier, which will offer new destinations important to Lithuanian passengers or increase the frequency of flights on existing routes, reports LETA/BNS.

Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, or LOU), the operator of the Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga international airports, said that it has issued a new call for applications for support from the Route Development Fund.

LOU spokeswoman Indre Baltrusaitiene told that a total of 1 mln euros will be allocated for this purpose under an agreement with the Transport Ministry.

The spokeswoman said that Slovenia's Adria Airways and Ukraine International Airlines have already submitted applications for 300,000 euros in support.

"Air carriers willing to offer new routes from the Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports will have to launch these routes by next June and operate at least two flights a week. They will also have to commit to operate that route at least for three months," said Gediminas Almantas, CEO of LOU.

Beijing, Munich, Porto, Tbilisi, Dubai and another 25 cities are on the list of desirable destinations from Vilnius, 21 cities, such as Moscow, Minsk, Oslo and Beijing, from Kaunas, and five cities, including Dublin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Helsinki and St. Petersburg, from Palanga.

Eight airlines were allocated slightly more than a mln euros from the fund in late 2015.
