China's Alibaba Group wants to use Latvia as transit point for its shipments
Contrary to earlier media reports that Alibaba Group was planning to invest in Lithuania and Estonia, the
company has informed the Investment and Development Agency that it has no
interest in investing in logistics centers in the Baltic region, and is
considering using the Riga Airport as a transit point for Alibaba Group shipments.
The Investment and Development Agency began to work with
Alibaba Group already in 2015 and originally offered the Chinese company, in
cooperation with the Riga International
Airport, to set up a distribution center in the airport's territory.
Given that Alibaba
Group is not planning to invest in logistics centers in the Baltics, and is
only interested in transit via the Riga Airport, the Investment and Development
Agency is now working with the airport on special tariffs to be offered to
Alibaba Group.
The Investment and Development Agency was working on a total
of 21 transport and logistics investment projects last year, while this year
there are eleven such projects.
