Estonia, Latvia to choose constructors for new power connection next spring

The Estonian transmission system operator Elering is to announce this fall the construction tenders for building the Estonian section of the third Estonian-Latvian power connection and the final decision is to be made next spring, reports LETA/BNS.

"The two countries will hold different tenders, although more or less at the same time. Estonia will hold two tenders: for the Harku-Lihula-Sindi section and for the section between Kilingi-Nõmme and the Estonian-Latvian border," told chief of communications at Elering Ain Koster.

"According to present plans we are to make a decision regarding launching construction with our Latvian colleagues next spring," Koster said. Since both countries are to launch their tenders -- one in Latvia and two in Estonia -- in the fall, their results should be announced at about the same time.

The total cost of the third Estonian-Latvian power connection is about 172 mln euros. In 2014 the European Union decided to cofinance the project with 112 mln euros.
