In May, retail trade turnover in Latvia rose by 3.4%

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to May 2015, total retail trade turnover in May 2016 rose by 3.4%. Turnover of retail trade in food products increased by 2.1%, whereas the turnover of retail trade in non-food products grew by 3.9%.

Compared to May 2015, in May 2016 the most significant turnover growth in the non-food product group was recorded in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 19.0%), in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 11.1%), in retail sale of automotive fuel (of 9.5%), and in retail sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods (of 8.0%). Whereas a drop in turnover was recorded in retail sale in stalls and markets (of 10.1%), in retail sale of hardware, paints and glass (of 6.2%), as well as in retail sale of information and communication equipment (of 1.9%).

 

Total retail trade turnover at current prices rose by 2.2% (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to April 2016, the total retail trade turnover in May 2016 grew by 0.9% (according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices). Turnover of retail trade in food products increased by 0.6%, whereas the turnover of retail trade in non-food products grew by 0.9%.

 

Compared to April, turnover growth was recorded in retail sale of automotive fuel (of 6.0%), in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 5.3%), in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 4.6%), in retail sale of second-hand goods (of 4.1%), as well as in retail sale of books and stationery (of 2.9%).Whereas a drop in turnover was observed in retail sale of information and communication equipment (of 8.2%), in retail sale of cosmetics and toiletries (of 6.4%), in retail sale of electrical household appliances (of 3.0%), and in retail sale of hardware, paints and glass (of 1.2%).

 

Compared to April, the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) rose by 4.6% in May. A year before – in May 2015, compared to April – the turnover increased by 3.8%.
