Latvia's Food Union dairy group, which comprises dairy companies Rigas Piena Kombinats (RPK), Valmieras Piens and Rigas Piensaimnieks, has started shipping its products to Iraq, the company’s representatives informed LETA.

"The first 7-ton shipment of Ekselence, Pols and Nu Fruit ice creams with special labels for the Iraqi market has already been sent to Iraq and is due to appear in stores in this market as of June 20, and a wide range of dairy products will start shipping in July. In accordance with our current agreement with the Iraqi partners, we will be shipping at least 20 tons of dairy products and ice cream for the Iraqi market each month, which will make Iraq one of our strategic markets. There is a plan to significantly increase these deliveries in the future," said RPK board chairman Normunds Stanevics.

The Latvian-made dairy products and ice cream will be made available in more than 200 supermarkets in Iraq's biggest cities – Baghdad, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, Kirkuk, Basra, among many others. Food Union products will also be available in the stores of the world’s second largest retailer Carrefour across Iraq's territory. Entering the Iraqi market is part of the company’s export expansion into the Middle East and Far East direction.

Stanevics noted that Iraq has long traditions of dairy product and ice cream consumption. In terms of volume, the most widely consumed dairy product in Iraq is milk – they mostly consume it reconstituted (from powder) and processed in ultra-high temperature (UHT technology) – as well as curd and cheese.

"The Iraqi dairy product market is large and developed, with Turkish and Iranian importers playing the leading role there. Our products will stand out on the shelves of Iraq’s stores with significantly higher quality and greater variety, which will include Karums sweet curd snack, RASA and Limbazu piens fresh cheeses, Dzintars processes cheeses, RASA butter and cream," the RPK board chairman said.

The company's representatives indicated that nearly 70% of Food Union products are sold on the domestic market, while 30% are shipped to more than 20 countries, including Lithuania, Estonia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Great Britain, China and other countries.
